The 7 C’s of Buying Diamonds
1. CUT
A diamond’s cut quality can range from excellent to poor. The quality of a diamond’s cut depends on its ability to reflect light. The more light a diamond is able to reflect, the more it will sparkle. The “brightness” of a diamond refers to the amount of white light reflected from the surface and interior of a diamond, “fire” is describing the flares of colour from a diamond and “scintillation” is the flashes of light produced when the diamond is moved. The proportions of the cut of a diamond along with the quality of the polish will determine the quality of the cut.

2. CLARITY
Inclusions in a diamond occur when a diamond is formed. The fewer inclusions, the more expensive the diamond becomes. However a completely flawless diamond is extremely rare.

3. CARATE WEIGHT
For diamonds under one carat, each carat is divided into 100 points-similar to pennies in a dollar. 0.75 carats = 75 points, ½ carat = 50 points.

4. COLOR
When grading the colour of a diamond it can range from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colour grades are determined by comparing each diamond to a master set. Each letter grade represents a range of colour and is a measure of how noticeable a colour is..
